In the past several months, Congress has attempted to police and control the Internet with bills such as PIPA, SOPA and CISPA. But due to blackout campaigns by websites such as Wikipedia, Google and Reddit and protest from citizens, the legislation has been shot down repeatedly. Now the hydra has reared a new head this time known as the Intellectual Property Attache Act. Aaron Swartz, founder and executive director for Demand Progress, joins us to examine how similar SOPA and IPAA really are.
Meanwhile in Canada...
Just last week, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade agreement was voted down, by a large margin I should mention, by the European Parliament. Quite a few people though, who wanted tougher restrictions and harsher penalties on those who break certain rules, were upset by this. And they're not giving up. They're using a tactic frankly we're seeing used here in the U-S as well. Trying to get other, more willing, countries to pass very similar provisions and then get their own country to then adopt those provisions under the guise of harmonizing and getting everyone on the same team. And it looks like Canada and CETA are the avenue this time. Kristine talks to University of Ottawa Law Professor Michael Geist.
Last week the EU Parliament voted against the Anti Counterfeiting Trade Agreement as the citizens of the EU rallied together to put a stop to internet censorship. The latest tactic to introduce these bills into law is to sneak similar provisions into the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)
