State TV Says Turkey Forces Syrian Plane to Land in Ankara Turkish state-run television says Turkey has forced a Syrian passenger plane to land in Ankara on suspicion that it was carrying weapons to Syria.
The station reported Wednesday that Turkish military jets intercepted the plane and that authorities are now inspecting its cargo in the capital.
The Syrian government has not commented on the report. The announcement comes after the head of Turkey’s armed forces said the military will respond with greater force if shelling from Syria continues to spill across the border.

Hours after Turkish authorities announced that the Syrian Airlines passenger plane intercepted by its F-16s was granted a departure clearance, the aircraft remained on the tarmac in darkness.
"Four people onboard have been beaten up, two crew and two passengers, as they tried to force them to sign documents," Sherin Azis, a hostess on the plane, told RT by phone. "We don't know what these papers are about. We are scared for the fate of the captain. He was taken away and threatened with arrest if he does not sign an emergency landing paper."
Fatima al-Saman, a passenger and a mother of three, also told RT that the captain was being forced to sign a release stating that military planes were not involved and the plane just made an emergency landing.
"If we do not agree to these terms, they will take the captain kind of hostage," al-Saman said. "They are threatening us. The captain has now returned and said that 'either I sign the document that I made an emergency landing or they are taking me hostage.'"
The plane has been surrounded by people in masks who have detained all the cargo and were looking through what looked like boxes with documents, passengers said. The Turkish authorities were interested in some spare parts, which a businessman bought in Russia and was transporting to Syria, al-Saman said. She said that as far as she could tell, they were clearly not weapons. "They started unloading some packages. They opened them, took pictures. There were many people. We all saw what was in there. There were no weapons. You could see it with an untrained eye!" she said. "They just had some spare parts and papers -- objects, but there were no rockets. It is all a lie." The captain himself did not even know why the plane was ordered down, al-Saman said. She added that the search involved only luggage, and the passengers were mainly ignored.
"Everyone is ignoring us, making it seem like we do not exist," she said. "The Russian Consulate did not get back to us. A lady has called one of the passengers and told her that the [embassy staff] are not being allowed to enter the airport territory. They have led us out of the plane where we kept asking for help, but everyone seems to ignore us."
'Close to disaster'
Following the incident Syrian Airlines accused the Turkish authorities of assaulting the airplane staff.
"The crew was subjected to aggressive behavior on the part of the Turkish authorities," said airline director Ghaida Abd Al-Latif. She said that the Turkish began to get aggressive when the crew refused to sign the papers stating that the plane made an emergency landing.
Al-Latif said that the Turkish jets intercepted the passenger plane in the air without any prior warning and flew so close by that a real "disaster could have happened."
Syrian Airline from Moscow to Syria DETAINED by Ankara Ankara endangered Russians by diverting a flight from Moscow to Damascus, Russia's Foreign Ministry said. Moscow expressed anger at not being informed that Russians were involved in the incident, and that their diplomats were denied access to them.
"We are troubled that the lives of the passengers aboard the plane, including 17 Russian citizens were put at risk by this inappropriate act. Turkey did not inform Russia that Russian citizens were among those detained on the plane. We found this out through the press," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Aleksandr Lukashevich said.
The Russian embassy in Turkey demanded access to the Russian citizens and dispatched consular officers and doctors to the Ankara airport. Turkish authorities, however, denied the Russian diplomats access to the passengers, in violation of the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. The Russian nationals were detained in the airport for eight hours.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has demanded an explanation from Turkish authorities, and that Ankara take steps to prevent future such incidents. Turkey defended the move by claiming that the plane could have carried "non-civilian cargo."
"There were no arms and military equipment aboard the civilian aircraft -- and could not be," a source in Russia's military industry told Interfax news agency. Russia has maintained its military-technical cooperation with Syria, and that any arms or military equipment sales to Damascus are conducted according to established practice. The current law expressly forbids arms sales facilitated by civilian aircraft.
'Air piracy'
Syrian transport minister Mahoumd Said said that Turkey's detention of the passenger aircraft is tantamount to "air piracy," and violates civil aviation treaties, Lebanon's al-Manar TV channel reported.
Tensions between Turkey and Syria rose after a Syrian shell killed five civilians in the border town of Akcakale last week. Turkey returned fire and said it would retaliate against any future provocation originating in Syria. NATO supported
Turkey's move and pledged to defend the country should the Syrian conflict spill across the border.

Syrian journalists say some Western and Arabic satellite news channels are fabricating events to accuse the Syrian army of attacking and terrorizing civilians. They refer to the recent case of Mohammad Salim Kabbani who used to go on live on Al-Jazira , Al-Arabia and Orient TV channels as the spokesman for the foreign-backed militant group calling itself the Free Syria Army.
He appeared on Arab media outlets as if he was in the city of Homs while he was in Northern Lebanon city of Tripoli. Mohammad salim Kabbani confessed 3 weeks ago in an interview on the Syrian Television that he was fabricating events to get money from those media outlets in return.
Paris has made its latest move in the political gambit over the Syrian crisis. French President Francois Hollande has called on Syria's opposition to form a provisional government, saying France won't hesitate to recognise it. Our correspondent Tesa Arcilla reports on what this means for the conflict.

The Syrian delegation has walked out on a session of the Non-Aligned movement in Tehran after Egyptian leader Mohammed Morsi called the Syrian regime "oppressive".
In his speech, Morsi added that Assad's government had lost its legitimacy, and urged attending nations to support the rebels.
Anti-war activist Sara Flounders says Morsi is trying to do America's bidding, who didn't want to see the meeting go ahead.
Britain and France say they're not ruling out any options in Syria, including a military-enforced no-fly zone. The deadlocked UN Security Council has again held a meeting on the crisis, with Turkey also pushing for the creation of a buffer zone. Professor Paul Sheldon Foote of California State University, who specializes in Middle Eastern affairs believes the US and its allies are using the humanitarian situation in Syria to pursue their agenda in the region.

A prominent author believes that the way Western media depicts the massacres in Syria reveals the fact that they are "done under the auspices of NATO". An unnamed military source said that the army attacked the terrorists who had killed and wounded many civilians in the village of al-Turaymisah on the outskirts of the western city of Hama on Thursday, Syria's official news agency SANA reported. The source added that a large number of armed rebels were killed and scores more captured in an offensive that was concluded without any civilian casualties. World opinion is being orchestrated towards a military operation against the Syrian regime, researcher and author F. William Engdahl told RT. Still, any decisive action against Assad will be postponed until after the US presidential election.
The international forces supporting regime change in Syria are continuing to mount pressure on the Assad regime, whipping up the fact that the country possesses chemical weapons. Despite the Syrian government's firm assurance these weapons will never be used in the internal conflict, countries supporting
Syrian opposition are openly discussing plans to take Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles under their control.
Since control could be established only by physical presence of some sort of military force at the sites where the weapons are kept, foreign intervention into the country would be necessary.
Syria's ex-ambassador to Iraq, who defected to the opposition, has claimed the Assad regime may have already used chemical weapons.
F. William Engdahl, the author of "Myths, Lies and Oil Wars" says all allegations the chemical weapons in Syria have already been used -- or will be in the future -- serve the single purpose of paving the way for intervention.
Chemical weapons are not precise and could not be used in residential quarters where most of the fighting in Syria is going on. They are "for huge battle field conditions," insists Engdahl, because "you'll [poison] your supporters as well as Al-Qaeda mercenaries," he explains.
Actually, the situation with chemical weapons in Syria is a déjà vu of the hysteria over the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq a decade ago, believes the researcher.
"I smell a re-run of the old Pentagon scenario that Dick Cheney and friends ran to justify the war in Iraq," Engdahl states. "And now they're trying to do that with the chemical warfare weapons of mass destruction in Syria, to create a climate that this is the most pressing thing on the face of the Earth. And this is simply not the case."
The historian wonders how many times it will take for people to wise up to the fact that the WMD hysteria was scripted in the RAND Corporation (American think tank) for Pentagon which put it into its "how-to" manuals.
"They are just toppling one regime after another to create their 'grand design'. This is not the way toward democracy. This is a way toward a one superpower tyranny," slams Engdahl.
The efforts to expose the Assad regime as a brutal one are going along the same lines as the media smear campaign against Colonel Muammar Gaddafi in Libya a year ago. Just like in Libya, the Syrian regime is now being accused of using fighter jets against rebels, without any evidence whatsoever being produced. In Libya the alleged use of its air force led to a UN-sanctioned no-fly zone over the country and ultimately the direct military interference of Western democracies into the internal conflict of a sovereign state.
"We're just watching the orchestration of images being played on to the world opinion," acknowledged Engdahl. "This is exactly what happened in Libya --'we must do something' and 'humanitarian intervention' and so forth," he explained. "Frankly, I don't think that that is a reality."
Engdahl believes that "establishing a no-fly zone over Syria now is not feasible given the massive and effective aircraft defenses that Syria has."
The Syrian conflict will be kept "on a hot burn" until after the presidential elections in the US, he shared.
"Whether Israel, for reasons of its own, in wanting to tip the US elections toward Mitt Romney and away from Obama -- whom [Israeli PM Benjamin] Netanyahu despises personally and politically -- that I can't say. I'm not privileged to have inside information on Israeli intent, if they are going to try to hot up this chemical weapons scenario to create the rush toward war," said Engdahl.
"I think we're going to see a huge escalation of all of this after the November elections and January oath of office of the next US president," he concluded.
"Obama doesn't want this breaking into an open war before the election. The last thing American voters want to see is another Iraq or Afghanistan on their doorstep."
