Global Economic Recovery is a top priority of the United States.

The Obama administration set up the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) to fast track the process. And what other group is better qualified to work out the details then the primary stakeholders - the industries directly impacted by trade barriers and regulation. Not surprising, they had plenty of suggestions to get things rolling. But most of what wound up in the agreement is secret. So when some of it leaked out - people took notice. Especially the parts changing the regulations on the environmental, copyright, Pharmaceuticals, labor, media, and health. All under the authority of a supper trade court empowered to force any country to abide by the agreement.

Dr. Margaret Flowers has strapped herself to a 15 foot high metal tripod while another protester lay across the road both block traffic to a luxury golf resort where a very Important International Trade Conference is taking place. The police threaten imminent arrest. Nearby a banner sails high with a message drawing attention to the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), which attracts neighbors and conference attendees. Meanwhile, inside the resort, a spokesperson from the U.S. Trade Representative tries to explains the purpose of the meeting, the leaked documents and why no body, including Congress - according to Representative Peter Defazio, except the negotiators and industry lawyers and lobbyists can observe the meeting or see the draft of what's being negotiated.

CITIZENS TRADE CAMPAIGN

A leaked draft of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) investment chapter has been published online by Citizens Trade Campaign, the same coalition that first published TPP proposals from the United States on intellectual property, regulatory coherence and drug formularies in late 2011. Draft texts are said to exist for some 26 separate chapters, none of which have ever been officially released by trade negotiators for public review.

“Americans deserve the right to know what U.S. negotiators are proposing in our names,” said Arthur Stamoulis, executive director of Citizens Trade Campaign. ”In the absence of transparency on the part of our government, we have a responsibility to share what information we receive about the TPP with the public.”

The new texts reveal that TPP negotiators are considering a dispute resolution process that would grant transnational corporations special authority to challenge countries’ laws, regulations and court decisions in international tribunals that circumvent domestic judicial systems.
